Tobias Johansson: The Unconventional Mind Behind Norway’s Hockey Success

  • News

Tobias Johansson has long been regarded as one of hockey’s most innovative coaching minds, redefining player development with his outside-the-box approach. From his roots in Sweden to his current role as the Head Coach of Norway’s National Team, Johansson’s influence on the sport continues to grow.

Those who attended TCS Live in 2023 certainly remember Johansson’s presentation: Coach and Play to Achieve. In it, Johansson presented on changing the traditional mindset of both players and coaches. He believes coaches should strive to make players a little better each day, instead of simply evaluating them on successes or failures.

Born in Kalmar, Sweden, Johansson played both soccer and hockey in his youth before committing fully to hockey at age 16. A goaltender, he competed for Tingsryds AIF at the J18 Elite, J20 Elite, and HockeyAllsvenskan levels before concluding his playing career in 2003 with Team Kalmar.

Johansson quickly transitioned into coaching, taking charge of the IF Mölndal Hockey J20 program in 2007. After a brief stint as Head Coach of Kungälvs IK, he returned to Mölndal before landing a prestigious role in 2013 with Frölunda HC, one of Sweden’s premier development programs.

At Frölunda, Johansson initially led the U16 team before expanding his role in 2017 to include Director of Player Development duties across multiple levels. Under his guidance, Frölunda secured both the U16 SM and J18 SM gold medals in the 2018-19 season. His tenure helped shape future NHL stars, with Frölunda alumni including Lucas Raymond, Rasmus Dahlin, and Henrik Lundqvist.

In 2021, Johansson took his expertise to Norway, becoming the Director of Player Development for the country’s men’s national program. A year later, he was named Head Coach of the Norwegian team for the IIHF World Championship.

Under Johansson’s leadership, Norway stunned the hockey world in the 2023 World Championship, defeating Canada 3-2 in a shootout. The victory, Norway’s first over Canada since 2000, showcased Johansson’s ability to inspire and develop players at the highest level.

Johansson’s success stems from his emphasis on creativity and confidence. He encourages players to take risks, believing that fear of failure stifles development. His philosophy—urging players to “want to achieve on the ice rather than wanting to avoid mistakes”—has helped transform Norway into an increasingly competitive hockey nation.

This June, Johansson will bring his expertise to TCS Live, offering a deeper look into his coaching philosophy and the innovative methods that have made him one of hockey’s most influential figures.
